The plan: Snow Bob 2015

02042015_snow_bob_rendering

My idea of what the Snow Bob will ultimately look like in the spot that I want. Franklyn Field, Rome, NY.

On Sunday, February 8, 2015, with the help of any volunteers that show up, I will build a Snow Bob the Squirrel.  The idea hit me hard yesterday morning, but it hit me softly the days before… as I was removing snow from my house, driveway etc.

I’ve never once complained about shoveling snow.  Not once.  I suppose I don’t have the gene that hates snow shoveling.  I thought, “If I’m going to be moving snow, why not make something out of it?”  And since I have squirrels on my brain anyway, it seemed a proper fit.  I sent a message to Lori Colasanti Frieden who immediately was on board.  She put the word out… she’s REALLY good at that.

Things went uphill (pun) from there.  It’s scary and exciting.  The last time I did any kind of snow sculpture was in 9th grade.  I’m sure snow hasn’t changed much 25 years.

The fun will start at 10am on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Franklyn’s Field, N. James St., Rome.  Bring any snow moving tools (shovels, carts) you want to use.  My idea is to make snow blocks in the general shape of Bob and then I’ll carve them out.  I just need help moving the snow.

Additionally, we’d also like to collect any kind of donations in the form of supplies for the Rome Humane Society.  PLEASE NOTE: Bringing a donation is not required to help with the sculpture.

Hopefully the snow is packy on Sunday!  I’ll be posting photos throughout the day documenting my process.  Where once there was snow, there will be squirrel.

If you’re in Rome, NY on Sunday…

On Sunday, February 8th, there will be a gathering at Franklyn’s Field in Rome, NY to build a large ‘Bob the Squirrel’ snow sculpture & we need many hands!

Those wonderful volunteers who show up will work together to form the snow mound and I will take it from there carving out the the ‘Bob’ details.

Plan to be there by 10am, but stop by throughout the day to help out & see the progress.  This will be something cool to tell everyone about.

For some added fun, we’ll be collecting dog & cat food for the Rome Humane Society, so bring a little something with you! ‪#‎RomeNYIsCold‬ ‪#‎LetsHaveSomeFun‬ ‪#‎Brrrrrr‬ ‪#‎BobTheSquirrel‬

Love conquers all… except coffee…

My beautiful wife called. Her vehicle is stuck in the driveway due to the snow dumped on our area this morning. She didn’t ask me to come and get her, but she kinda sorta did. So, I grab my coat and keys and head out to the rescue. My car is about 4 points worse in the snow than hers is. Remember that because it becomes important later on.

I get to work several hours before her…meaning there are several hours of snow on my car. I get as much of that off as I can. Freezing. Snowing. Barely make it out of the parking lot. Get on the road, slipping and sliding amid several plows and an ambulance. Yep.

Turn off the main Boulevard onto a side street. The side street is a hill. The hill doesn’t like me. I get about ten feet up it when gravity and horsepower butt heads. My tires are spinning. I’m holding up traffic. I cannot go forward, I can only go backwards. I throw my car into reverse and back into, yes, BACK INTO the Boulevard… during a time when vehicle brakes may or may not work. My heart is in my throat, all the blood drains from my knuckles… ugh.

I take the long way home. The way without any hills. I get to my house and Lez is waiting for me. The car is definitely stuck. No time to try and get it out, we need to get back to work. The streets are messy, slushy, dangerous. We’re moving at approximately -3 mph. I just need to get us back to work, let the snow die down and deal with it all later.

And my wife, the love of my life, the apple of my eye, the cheese in my sandwich…do you know what she said as I slid us to work?

“Can we stop for coffee? I really need a coffee.”

And THAT is why I married her.
